A water desalination system is described, comprising a pump powered by renewable energy and in fluid communication with a water source to be desalinated; a reverse osmosis membrane unit in fluid communication with the pump; an energy recovery device disposed between and in fluid communication with the pump and the reverse osmosis membrane unit; and a water storage unit in fluid communication with the pump and the reverse osmosis membrane unit.
