The novel-tris-(perfluoroalkyl)-phosphine oxides are of formula (I) (RF)3P=O (I) (where RF is opt. branched 2-8C perfluoroalkyl). E.g. Tripopyl phosphine oxide is electrochemically fluorinated in anhydrous HF to give perfluoropropylphosphine oxide. As solvents for rare earth metal salts; complexants in the sepn. of useful heavy metals in non-aqs. media; as oleohydrophobic substances in the prepn. of flame-repellant compsns., raw materials for the prepn. of surfactants.
