1417304 Oxychlorination of methane LUMMUS CO 17 Oct 1973 [19 Oct 1972] 48374/73 Heading C2C Chlorinated methanes are produced by contacting in an oxychlorination zone CH 4 and HCl and/or Cl 2 with a molten mixture comprising CuCl 2 , CuCl and CuO.CuCl 2 at 700-860‹ F. The CH 4 conversion is preferably 10-30% when Cl 2 is used and 10-15% when HCI is chlorinating agent. The molten mixture may comprise 20-40% by weight KCl as m.pt. depressant, 20-55% by weight CuCl 2 , 0À5-4% by weight CuO.CuCl 2 and remainder CuCl.
