Coesters with a mol. wt. of 700-10000, pref. 1200-7000, are made from >=1 phenol with 2 or 3 phenolic OH gps. in 1-3 benzene rings, carbonic acid and an inorganic acid such as H3PO4, phosphorous acid, or boric acid. Pref. the mol. ratio carbonic acid to inorganic acid in the coesters= 19:1-1:19. Typical polyhydric phenol starting materials are 2,5-di tert. butyl hydroquinone alkylidene bisphenols, or bisphenols in which the benzene rings are bound by a sulphur atom. The coesters are esp. useful at 0.01-5 wt. % addn. as heat stabilisers in polymers such as polyolefins, PVA, polystyrene, acrylic resins, HIPS, ABS, polybutylene terephthalate, polyesters, polyamides, polycarbonates, polyurethanes, amino resins, PVC, rubbers, etc., generally in conjunction with known stabilisers such as thiodipropionic acid esters, 1,2-epoxides (e.g. epoxidised soya oil), organic phosphites, polyhydric alcohols, polyvalent metal salts of monocarboxylic acids (e.g. Zn stearate), UV absorbers, heavy metal deactivators (e.g. melamine), etc. |
