Removal of sulphur oxides from waste gases - by passing over metal oxide impregnated carbon to form sulphuric acid which is converted to sulphur

S oxides are removed from waste gases, which contain also O and water vapour the latter in an amt. corresp. to at least the dew pt. of 35 degrees (45 degrees) and max. to the relative satn. of about 90% by passing the gases at a temp. of 20 degrees-200 degrees C (50-100 degrees C) over an absorption agent such as activated C which is impregnated with an oxide of Co, Ni, Mo or W or a mixt. of these oxides until the agent contains 5-80 wt.% H2SO4. The S cpds. are desorbed with a hydrogenating gas at 150 degrees-450 degrees C for the regeneration of the absorption agent.
