<p>1506767 Collapsible steering columns FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 25 Nov 1975 48308/75 Heading B7H A steering column assembly includes a steering shaft of two coaxial sections 1, 2 adapted for connection to a steering wheel 29 and a steering gear box (not shown) respectively, the sections being interconnected by a slidable joint 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 at which resistance must be overcome before relative sliding of the sections 1, 2 can occur, and a collapsible tube 14 is secured at one end 20 to shaft section 1 and adapted to be secured at its other end 47 to the body structure of a vehicle so that, on impact, section 1 slides relative to section 2 and the tube 14 collapses. The slidable joint comprises a plate 3 which is secured to shaft section 1 and has an elongate aperture 4 receiving the shaft section 2, the plate 3 also being provided with two pins 5 normally engaged in rubber bushes 8 carried by a plate 6 affixed to the end of section 2. The tube 14 is slidably received at 17 in a bracket assembly comprising two half-shells 35 having resilient members 41 fitted thereover, the members 41 being gripped between a bracket 43 and a channel section 45 which is attached to vehicle panels 50, 52 by members 49, 53. Tube 14 has a collapsible convoluted section 16 adjacent its end bracket 47 which is bolted to the channel section 45.</p> |
