1428378 End face seals PIONEER OILSEALING & MOULDING CO Ltd 4 July 1973 [5 July 1972 15 Feb 1973] 31452/72 and 7412/73 Heading F2B In an end face seal the sealing members 30, 42 are held in axially adjoining relation with one another by a retainer clip 52 extending between the members. The member 30 is carried by an elastomeric carrier 12 integrally connected by a bellows 28 with an annular seal 10 reinforced by a metal shell 18. Ribs 10 on the seal 10 engage grooves 38 on the member 34 and a spring 48 urges the member 30 against the member 42 which is encased in a rubber shroud 44 formed at its inner periphery with a lip 46 to tightly engage, in use, a rotary shaft so that the member 42 rotates therewith. The clip 52 which may be of polythene, P.T.F.E., or other plastics, has a groove 58 engaging a rib 60 on the member 30 and a flange 56 shaped complementarily at its free end to the radially outer surface of the shroud 44, the clip being free to rotate relative to the member 42. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the retaining clip (62) firmly engages a rib (66) on the shroud (44) and has a bead (70) co-operating with a flange (72) in the member (30). The retaining clip may be made of a material, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol, which is soluble in the fluid, e.g. water, in which the seal is to be used. |
