PURPOSE:To reduce the diffusion of OH groups and the loss and to attain a further lowered loss ratio by forming the clad with B2O3-SiO2 glass or P2O5- B2O3-SiO2 glass and by regulating the total amount of P2O5 and B2O3 as dopants to a specified mol% range. CONSTITUTION:The central core 1 of an optical fiber with a circular section is formed with high purity SiO2, the glass coat 3 is formed with inexpensive SiO2 of relatively low strength, and the clad 2 is formed with B2O3-SiO2 glass or P2O5-B2O3-SiO2 glass. The total amount of B2O3 and P2O5 as dopants in the clad 2 is regulated to 8-15mol%. When the amount is <8%, the clad becomes hard and it is difficult to obtain the sectional shape shown by the figure. When the amount exceeds 15%, the clad becomes soft and the formation of the core is impossible. |
