The cpds. 2-chloro-6-methyl-4-benzylphenol (I); 2-chloro-6-methyl-4-(4-chlorobenzyl)-phenol and 2-chloro-6-methyl-4-(3,4-dichlorobenzyl)-phenol are new. Process for making 4-aralkylphenols of formula (IV) (R1 = CH2 or cHCH3. R2 and R3 = H or Cl), comprises aralkylating the overhead product formed during distillation of the reaction mixt. obtained by chlorination of 2-7ethylphenol (V) for mfr. of 4-chloro-2-methylphenol (VI). This overhead consists largely of 2-chloro-6-methylphenol with smaller amounts of (V) and (VI), which are opt. removed. (IV) are recovered by distillation and/or crystallisation. (IV) are antimicrobials effective against bacteria and fungi and are compatible with the epidermis (low toxicity and no sensitisation). They may be incorporated into pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and soaps. In tests on mice (I) has LD50 1.7g/kg(orally), 1 g/kg(subcutaneously) and 96 mg/kg (intravenously). The overhead used to make (IV) was previously a waste material disposed of by burning.
