A propellant, such as hydrogen peroxide or hydrazine is stored without press. in a closed container (21). A fuel pump (22) driven by a turbine (24) passes the propellant at high press to a hydraulic motor (26) from whose shaft (27) mechanical energy may be taken. The propellant exhaust flows at a correspondingly reduced pressure at a gas generator (23). The gas generator produces high press hot gases in the usual way to drive the turbine (24) from whose shaft mechanical energy may be drawn. The system can be used to drive an under water torpedo. The hydraulic motor (26) drives a regulator propeller and the turbine (24) turns the main propeller. A pressurised cylinder is provided for start purposes.
