A method is claimed for producing a lubricating pad for axle bearings, partic. of railway vehicles. The lubricating pad consists of an outer sleeve of absorbent material and of a resilient hollow core member supporting the outer sleeve. It is adapted when compressed for insertion underneath an axle journal. The outer sleeve consists of a woven band provided in consecutive areas with knop-like elevations in the form of loops of thick warp threads. The method comprises (a) providing a woven band of absorbent material during its prodn. with relatively spaced full sized panel areas and pairs of half sized panel areas armed with loops of warp threads, the sides of the panel areas being equally set back from the two edges of the woven band and each full sized panel area which in length equals one third of the circumference of the finished pad alternating with a pair of minor panel areas of half the length of the full sized panel area, whereas the distances between consecutive panel areas are equal in length and amt. to about one sixth of the circumference of the finished pad; (b) dividing the woven band into sections by cutting it in the middle between each two halft panel areas; (c) placing the cut sections each around a resilient hollow core member; (d) turning the remaining marginal portions surrounding each panel area inwards, and (e) joining together the facing sides of the marginal portion at the ends of the adjoining half sized panel areas. |
