<p>1489002 Severing by tearing WUPAMASCHINENFABRIK GmbH & CO KG 31 Jan 1975 [1 Feb 1974] 4223/75 Heading B4B Apparatus for separating lengths of material, e.g. paper, connected together at lines of weakness, comprises a pressure means 18 having a pair of contact surfaces 20 which are arranged to engage the material one at each side of the line of weakness, such that when downward pressure is applied to the apparatus, the contact surfaces grip the material and also move away from each other so as to separate the lengths of material. As shown in Fig. 1, the contact surfaces 20, e.g. of rubber are provided on levers 18 each pivotally mounted on a respective pin 16 fixed in a U-section bracket 12; the contact surfaces may be in the form of suction cups. The levers are formed with slots 32 and loaded by a torsion spring. In use, when the bracket is moved downwardly by a press, the contact surfaces abut the material and continued pressure causes the levers to move apart against the action of the spring to sever the material. In modifications, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), different configuration of levers are used, together with a compression spring and leaf spring respectively; the two levers may be replaced by an integral leaf spring provided with contact surfaces, Fig. 2 (not shown). Alternatively, a single lever (148<SP>1</SP>), Fig. 8 (not shown), may be pivotally mounted on a bracket (142) which is provided with a contact surface 150; a secondary force "t" is arranged to act on a surface (160) of the lever. The contact surface may be provided on a separate member (170), Fig. 9 (not shown), pivoted on the lever. In the modification shown in Fig. 7, the contact surfaces 120 are provided on levers 118 moved outwardly by means of a toggle mechanism 127, 130.</p> |
