In the annealing of sheet glass wherein the glass is cooled rapidly to the upper annealing temperature by extraction of its heat by radiation in a uniform manner across the entire width of the sheet, the heat extraction is effected by indirect heat exchange with a gaseous fluid circulated through the hollow walls of a chamber through which the glass sheet is passed.
