A coiler for coiling strip material deflected from a longitudinal path of travel comprises a rotatable mandrel arranged away from the path of travel, a frame arranged on the side of the mandrel away from the path of travel in a manner to provide an opening between the mandrel and a continuation of the path, and at least two strip guiding assemblies carried by and movable relative to the frame and adapted to be brought into a guiding relationship with different portions of the mandrel for causing the material to be coiled thereon, the assemblies being so carried by the frame that when they are moved away from the mandrel a coil can be formed with its periphery immediately adjacent a continuation of the path of travel. The coiler 22 comprises a strip entry table 10 over which strip passes to a pair of independently driven pinch rolls 12, 13 mounted on an overhanging frame 14 having a coiler table 17 forming an extension thereof on which is pivotally mounted a guide 46 actuated by fluid means 48, a mandrel 23 mounted on a frame 20 on which are mounted wrapper roller assemblies 34, 41, an extension guide 46a and a pivotally mounted trailing roller 51 biased by fluid means 53 to keep the trailing end of a coil against the body thereof. The upper and lower wrapper assemblies comprise trunnion shafts 26, 28; 27, 29 to which are connected arms supporting frames 33, 39 to which are secured arcuate guides 36, 43 and rollers 35, 42 each assembly being pivoted towards the mandrel by fluid means (40), Fig. 2 (not shown). The assembly 41 has an additional strip guide portion 44. The coiler assembly 22 is laterally removable along guideways 54, 55 clear of the area defined by the pit and table 17 by fluid means 56. The wrapper assemblies may alternatively move in a linear path. The pinch rolls may be cantileverly supported.</p>
