Tubular component for automotive link shaft installation - has circumferential surface folds formed by axial upsetting process

The tubular constructional component, which is torsion proof but bendable lengthways and crossways under the application of a slight load, is suitable for installation in an automotive link shaft. On its surface, and running circumferentially, the tubular component (1) has folds (3) formed by an axial upsetting process. The folds (3) are distributed over the whole length of the component (1) with clearance from each other. The method used to produce the component is to take a smooth tube, apply an axial load to it of sufficient force and duration to cause the folds (3) to form, and then to draw it out until the predetermined length is achieved.
