The device contains a changeover switch (1) which is connected to the transformer taps (3-6) and which has bridge rectifiers (7-11) with semiconductor elements. The number of bridge rectifiers is equal to the number of voltage steps, commutation thyristors (12-16) and at least one LC circuit (17-32) which is connected to the poles of the bridge rectifiers being disposed in the DC circuit of the bridge rectifiers. This device needs no control pulses in normal operation. It comprises contactless static switching elements and is characterised by high reliability. The device is very quick-acting and its natural frequency can be above the mains frequency. <IMAGE>
