The distributing mechanism uses an endless transport web (4), with a motor for indexing the latter. A number of compartments (6), which are normally inaccessible from outside are fixed side by side along the transport web (4), each compartment (6) containing a respective article. Each compartment (6) has an identification code, which can be compared with a reference code, with the drive motor for the transport web (4) stopped when the two coincide and access means for the compartment (6) released. The comparison means for the identification and reference codes use read-out means for scanning the successive identification codes as the compartments (6) pass by.
