In the treatment of a moving web of fabric, plastic or paper, calendar rollers are pressed together by magnetic forces. The pole shoe adjacent to the roller or the support is fitted with projecting and recessed sections matching the axial and/or tangential spacings of the separate rollers pressing against the material. The axial and/or tangential guide for the pressure rollers can be provided by a cage or other guiding system, without the rollers touching each other.
