The IC engine cooling system using steam spraying directly into the cylinders. To achieve this a rectangular section, annular plate (8) is fitted in the top of the cylinders, sealing against the cylinder head/walls and seating against the top of the liner (3) under spring (9) pressure. Cylindrical axial recesses (11) in this plate house pistons (12) with an axial aperture (15). A spring loaded ball valve (13) seals one end of this aperture its spring (18) also holds closed a centrally split closure/sprayer disc over an injection hole (21) into the cylinder (5). A ring (17) bolted into the cylinder head (4) supports the pistons and seals a chamber (14) above them connected to the cooling water supply. A resilient water (24) between piston and head permits some piston movement and water flow through the aperture (15). combustion chamber pressure lifts the plate against the springs. The hydraulic pressure thereby set up in the recesses tilts the closure/sprayer discs (19) and water/stream sprays into the cylinder. Reducing pressure allows the plate to drop back and the recesses to refill.
