Catalyst bed (Claus type) for the deposition of S formed by the reaction between SO2 and H2S contained in gaseous effluents (Claus process) is regenerated by first removing the deposited S using a gas stream having a temp. of 232-371 degrees C (the sulphur is subsequently removed from the gas stream in a condenser), and then cooling the catalyst bed to 127-149 degrees C. The cooling is effected by recycled gases. This process is improved by adding to the recycled cooling gas a proportion of the gas purified in the reactor, contg. 1.0 mole % (pref. 0.2 mol%) of H2S+SO2 and 20-40 mole% of water vapour. The catalyst is gradually re-hydrated during the cooling period (rapid re-hydration during the working period by contact with gaseous effluents contg. a large proportion of water vapour would drastically reduce the activity of the catalyst and shorten its service life). The transfer of S during the cooling period is insignificant.
|
