High explosive fragmentation shell head - has separate balls around inner core held in place by envelope of sintered material

The shell or projectile has an inner core machined from a solid billet of metal. An inner cavity (7) is provided for the charge of high explosive and the outer profile is machined to give a portion between both ends (2,3) which is of reduced diameter (1). This reduced portion is packed with a large number of hardened steel balls (5), distributed along the length and around the diameter. Over these is laid an envelope (6) of sintered material, holding the balls in place and machined to give the final shell profile. A ring (8) fits over this to guide the shell.
