HALOGENATED HYDROTHIOPHENE 1,1-DIOXIDES THEIR USE AS ALGICIDES BACTERICIDES AND FIRE RETARDANTS

Growth and proliferation of algae and bacteria in aq. systems is inhibited by treatment with a halothiophene deriv. of formula (I) or the novel deriv. of formula (II): (in which formulae X is F, Cl Br or I; X1 = Cl or Br). (I) and (II) are also used to protect proteinaceous material (e.g. leather); carbohydrates; plastics and textiles against microbial spoilage and to increase the fire resistance of paints; paper; plastics and textiles. Esp. useful for controlling bacteria which attack Fe; reduce sulphates; form sludges or cause deterioration of water-soluble cutting oils. (I) and (II) are also useful as agricultural bactericides. (Some are already known as fungicides; herbicides; insecticides; miticides; nematocides and seed dressing). Generally they protect any material subject to microbial spoilage. They are more effective in alkaline than in neutral or slightly acid systems. A pref. cpd. (I; X=X1=Cl) was added at 50 ppm. to paper pulp infested with Enterobacter aerogenes. After 18 hr% kill was 80% at pH 5.5; 99.9% at pH 6.5 and 99.98% at pH 7.5.
