1506682 Fuel injection pumps L E JOHNSON 13 Jan 1976 [17 March 1975] 01220/76 Heading F1A In a fuel injection pump comprising a plunger 11 reciprocable in the bores of a fixed cylinder member 13 and a control sleeve member 24, the increase in the clearance between the plunger and the cylinder member and/or the sleeve member due to the fuel pressure in the pumping chamber 12 communicated thereto through an inlet port 19 and a spill port 22 is minimized by providing the member 13 with a skirt 35 and/or the member 24 with at least one skirt 36 or 37. Each skirt has a larger internal diameter than the cylinder and sleeve bores. The plunger has a coaxial bore which is not less than half nor more than seven-tenths of the outer diameter of the plunger, whereby the plunger expands under the pressure to compensate for the expansion of the members 13, 14. A plug 44 having one or more flats 42 is retained by a transverse pin 45 in the plunger bore thereby to reduce the dead space. In another embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the sleeve 24 has only the lower skirt 37 and the outer diameter of the plunger between the members 13, 24.
|
