Cooling elements are inserted between the thyristors. They are at least partly used for current conduction. AT least one thyristor column together with corresponding control elements and at least a part of other components is enclosed in an axis symmetrical conducting screen and connected to it. This screen is inserted into a cylindrical conducting protective tube and held there by insulating supports. The tube is closed at both ends by insulating closures, and filled with SF6 gas under pressure. At least one lead passes, tightly sealed, through at least one closure, as in 25 30 017. The protective tube (14) is made of plastics and is metal coated on its outer and/or inner surface.
