PURPOSE:To obtain the title thickener which can control the viscosity of an aqueous dispersion over a wide range of temperature, comprising a thermoreversibly hydrophilic and hydrophobic (co)polymer of a specified acrylamide type vinyl compound with, optionally, other vinyl compounds. CONSTITUTION:A monomer mixture comprising an acrylamide type vinyl compound (A) (e.g., N-methoxyethoxypropylacrylamide) an aqueous solution of whose homopolymer shows thermoreversible hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity and, optionally, at most 90mol%, preferably, 60mol% or below, other vinyl compounds (e.g., ethyl acrylate) are (co)polymerized at 10-100 deg.C in a solvent (e.g., dioxane) in the presence of 0.01-10 wt.%, based on the mixture, redical polymerization initiator (e.g., azobisisobutyronitrile) to obtain the title thickener which is a thermoreversibly hydropholic and hydrophobic (co)polymer having an intrinsic viscosity (in a tetrahydrofuran solution at 27 deg.C) of 0.3 or above, preferably, 0.5 or above. To an aqueous dispersion is added 0.001-30pts.wt. (in terms of a solid matter) thickener per 100pts.wt. solid matter of the dispersion. |
