The exhaust turbocharger unit has at least one exhaust turbocharger assembly (3-9), which has at least one exhaust turbine (3, 4, 5) and one compressor (9). The exhaust turbocharger assembly can be temporarily driven by external energy. The latter is supplied to the exhaust turbocharger assembly in the form of fuel gas from a gas turbine unit (12-16). An easily storable energy source can thereby be used, the means required for the additional drive being separate from the piston internal combustion engine (1), however, so that when it is operating at full load they do not intrude upon its functioning. In addition, the gas turbine unit can also be designed to deliver a constant quantity of fuel gas so that it has a good efficiency. This is particularly advantageous in cases where the exhaust turbocharger assembly is operated for longer periods using external energy, especially in low-load ranges of the piston internal combustion engine (1).
