Composite sheet or tiles for floor coverings comprising a thin, wear resistant surface layer, and an intermediate layer of plastic material filled with metallic particles which can dissipate heat. The intermediate layer can dissipate heat from local surface hot spots, e.g. discarded cigarettes, to inhibit ignition, damage or thermal degradation of the surface or other layers. Use of highly heat resistant (and expensive) materials for the surface coating may be reduced or eliminated.
