Adding inoculants and/or alloying agents to metal before casting - where agents are located in pouring funnel used to fill mould

Molten metals are inoculated and/or alloyed by the addn. of agents during the mfr. of castings, the agents being added via the pouring funnel forming part of the mould. The agent(s) can be located in the funnel by coating a sieve plate with the agent(s); making a sieve plate from the agent(s); or placing a disc made of the agent(s) on top of the sieve plate. The agent(s) may also be used as a coating on the pouring funnel, or as a moulding forming part of the funnel. A further alternative is to use a disc made of the agent(s) and located in the funnel below a disc made of plastic or metal which retards the reaction of the agents with the melt. The pouring funnel may also be provided with a plastic sheath leaving a conical annulus filled with powdered agent(s), the plastic sheath being destroyed by the molten metal. Ensures that all the agents react with and are mixed with the molten metal, without the loss of agents which occurs when they are added to a ladle.
