1470372 Polymer compositions for making multicellular articles by stretching BAKELITE XYLONITE Ltd 26 March 1974 [26 March 1973 31 Oct 1973] 14513/73 and 50654/73 Headings C3C and C3P Compositions which can be formed into shaped articles and stretched to produce multicellular articles comprise (1) an orientable thermoplastics material and (2) 2 to 50 weight per cent of a metal resinate or a modified or unmodified rosin ester, which additive is at least partially incompatible with the thermoplastics material and at least in part comprises a separate phase uniformly distributed within the thermoplastics material. The thermoplastics material may be polyethylene, polypropylene, ethylene/propylene copolymer, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polyethylene terephthalate or nylon- 11. The metal resinate may be a zinc or calcium resinate or mixture thereof, and the rosin ester may be a dimerized rosin, maleic rosin or polymerized rosin ester. The compositions may also contain fillers, e.g. calcium carbonate and diatomaceous earth; pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide; acid binding agents, e.g. calcium oxide; and lubricants, antistatic agents, blowing agents, stabilizers and incompatible polymers. The compositions may be made into filaments, tubes, bottles, films and sheets, including paperlike products which may be subjected to corona discharge treatment after stretching to improve ink adhesion. Examples describe compositions comprising polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene or mixtures of polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene; calcium/zinc resinates, dimerized rosin ester, maleic rosin ester, maleic polymerized rosin ester, dimerized calcium resinate or zinc resinate; and optionally calcium carbonate, titanium dioxide, diatomaceous earth and calcium oxide; which compositions are formed into tubular films, sheets and tapes which are uni- or biaxially stretched to give multicellular articles. |
