1537416 Seat belts and deceleration forces FORENADE FABRIKSVERKEN 20 April 1977 [26 April 1976] 16393/77 Heading A3V A vehicle deceleration sensing device has a body 3 which is displaceable by deceleration from the position shown in Fig. 1 in which the body 3 is restrained by an inner portion 8a of an annular spring 8 which has an outwardly extending flange 8b which is deflectable axially of the spring 8 to effect radial flexure of the spring 8 and release of the body 4 for displacement; and another body 6 which is displaceable by deceleration from the setting shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 2, the body 6 being disposed to cause deflection of the flange 8b on the occurrence of a substantial movement of the body 6 from its position of repose. When deceleration forces of a predetermined magnitude occur, the body 6 will move downwards. If, however, the deceleration forces are of short duration, the body 6 will not have time to move downwards far enough to engage the flange 8b of the spring 8. Thus, when the deceleration forces cease, the spring 7 will return the body 6 to the position shown in Fig. 1 without disturbance of the spring. Upon prolonged deceleration of a certain magnitude, however, the body 6 will have time to move downwards, corresponding to the distance d, until a shoulder 11 of a recess 10 pushes the flange 8b downwards, thereby causing flexure of the spring into its second position as shown in Fig. 2, in which the inner portion 8a of the spring releases the body 3. If deceleration continues after this, the body 3 moves in the deceleration direction 12 against the action of a spring 5. The consequent movement of the body 3 can be used to cause tightening of a seat belt or belts of a safety harness. |
