The mechanism forms a stream of tobacco from a skein in a cigarette-making machine, having a skein conveyor and a stream conveyor at right angles to it, the latter in the form of a U-shaped channel with an air-permeable bottom. In a first section (9) of the stream conveyor, the bottom (2) of the channel (1) is subjected to suction only near one edge. In a second section (11) downstream of the first it is subjected to suction only near the opposite edge, and in a third still further downstream over its entire width. There can be a conveyor belt (3) running over the stationary passage bottom.
