<p>1484190 Sports bat ZIMM-ZAMM AG 5 Nov 1974 [9 Nov 1973 (2) 16 April 1974] 47738/74 Heading A6D A bat includes a head structure defining a plurality of through openings therein and formed either as an integral unstressed lattice structure 16 or a perforated structure (not shown); a striking zone at or near the centre of the structure being indicated in the case of the lattice structure by closing one or more openings, and in the case of the perforated structure by the zone having a localised reduction in holes/unit area. In the embodiment shown, a one-piece plastics (e.g. polypropylene) racquet has a lattice structured striking face 16 at the centre of which is formed a flat disc 22 surrounded at its periphery by a raised annular portion 24. A localised increase in density afforded by the disc 22 is effective in defining an optimum striking area i.e. "sweet spot", and the incorporation of cup formation 4 at the centre of, and at each side of, the disc 22 serves as a sound indicator when a ball is correctly struck. In an alternative embodiment (not shown) the striking area is in the form of a foraminated wood board, the holes so distributed that at least one zone-preferably the centre "sweet spot" has fewer holes than the surrounding area.
