A floor covering material, of total thickness between 1À5 and 5 mm. consists of a film 1 of synthetic polymer of thickness 0À5 to 3 mm. and a base layer 2 consisting of a web of oriented essentially continuous organic filaments arranged at random in a non-parallel manner across the web; the density of the web being less than 0À2 kg./dm.<SP>3</SP> and the film comprising 70 to 85% by weight of the total weight of the material. The film 1 may be produced from a plastisol, e.g. one based on P.V.C., or from resins based on polycondensates, e.g. polyamides or polyesters, or from polyolefines, and may include plasticizers, antioxidants, chalk, and colouring agents. The base layer 2 may be a web of " spunbonded " filaments of polyethylene terephthalate, isotactic polypropylene, polyamide, polyvinyl chloride, pdlyvinylidene chloride, cellulose acetate, or polyacrylonitrile, and may be needle punched. The layer 2 may consist of two or three " spunbonded " webs joined by needle punching. In one described method of making the floor covering polyethylene terephthalate is extruded from a heated spinneret, and the extruded filaments pass to a drawing tube before being deposited by an oscillating deflector on to an endless moving belt. The web so formed is needle punched. A plastisol which comprises P.V.C. and which has been spread by a doctor blade on to a siliconized paper is applied to the " spunbonded " web by pressure and controlled spacing. After passing the assembly through an oven to gell the polymer the siliconized paper is removed. The resultant product is resilient, and wear, abrasion, rot water, moisture and deformation resistant.</p>
