Typewriter has a keyboard arranged in two portions (5, 6) spaced apart by a distance (A) corresponding to the average shoulder width of the operators and in positions convenient for use by the left and right hand of the operator respectively. The keyboard portions each have one half of the keys of the usual ten finger system. The space between the two keyboard portion is used to provide a table on which a stenographer's pad may be placed or where a CRT viewing screen may be accommodated. The respective portions of the keyboard may slope forwards towards the operator and outwards away from the central space.
