An expanding mandrel to hold work for e.g. turning on a lathe, as in the main patent, has a central rod (6) which is moved axially to grip or release the work. This pushes against a conical member (4) flanged at its inner end for bolting onto a conical block (3) supported by a ball bearing (2) inside the correspondingly tapered part of a ring (1) in turn bolted to a sleeve through which the rod passes. The conical block has a shoulder (3c) against which fits the inner race of the ball bearing, with a small diameter extension (3a) passing through the inner race. This shoulder is made to a maximum diameter at the termination of the sloping face (3b) of the cone, so that larger sized work can be held. An alternative design is given.
|
