摘要 <p>Process for decomposing water into hydrogen and oxygen comprises (1) reacting iodine with water and H2SO3 to form HI and H2SO4; (2) decomposing the HI into H2+I2; (3) decomposing the H2SO4 into H2O and SO3 e.g. via Fe2O3 or CuO; (4) decomposing the SO3 into SO2+O2 and (5) reacting the SO2 with water to form further H2SO3. Pref. stage (2) is operated at 400-900 degrees C, stage (3) at around the b.pt. of H2SO4 (nearly equal 300 degrees C) and stage (4) is conducted at 500-900 degrees C in the presence of a catalyst such as V2O5 or Pt. Stage (2) may be accomplished by reacting HI with Fe2O3 to form I2, FeO and H2O, and the FeO is reacted with H2O to form Fe2O3 and H2. Process is esp. useful for converting surplus heat, e.g. from nuclear reactors, into a useful fuel source. Process has less technical difficulties than decomposing water by electrolysis.</p>
