A plurality of crystal laser rods 1, Fig. 3, are optically pumped by ionizing a gas contained in a hollow annular transparent enclosure 6 through which the rods extend, electric discharge in the gas being initiated by breakdown of a spark gap 11 which causes current to pass through an electrode 10 and a metallic casing 9 substantially surrounding the gas enclosure. The general direction of the current is indicated by the arrowed broken lines in the figure, its passage through the metallic casing causing a pinch effect on the plasma created by the gas discharge and thereby localizing the discharge energy away from the walls of the enclosure. The spark gas is insulated from the return current path by an insulating wall 13. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the spark gap is located within the dimensions of the enclosure. The rods may be of ruby and the metallic casing formed from copper.</p> |
