1505213 Laminated automobile headliners VAN DRESSER CORP 5 Feb 1976 [2 July 1975] 04656/76 Heading B5N A laminated self-supporting automotive headliner comprises a substrate of expanded plastics foam material which has a predetermined contour and substantial resistance to bending, a finish cover and an intermediate layer of soundabsorbing, compressible, flexible plastics foam disposed between the substrate and the finish cover, the intermediate layer being less rigid than the substrate. The substrate may be of expanded polystyrene of thickness 0À100- 0À180 inch and may be formed either by moulding or by thermoforming an extruded sheet. The intermediate layer may be of polyurethane foam of thickness 0À060-0À500 inch and may be bonded to the substrate using a synthetic resin adhesive. The finish layer may be formed of knitted nylon fabric which may have a soft backing, e.g. of polyurethane foam, or may be an optionally perforated vinyl skin having a soft backing, e.g. of polyurethane foam or of rayon. In an alternative construction, the substrate and intermediate layer are formed by a layer of foam, e.g. of polyurethane, having integral skins on one or both surfaces sufficiently rigid to hold the shape, bonded to the finish layer by means of an adhesive. |
