The drive mechanism is for an electrical switchgear with an energy storage unit. The storage unit is mounted on a fixed and on a movable support. The movable support acts as an actuator for supplying or withdrawing the energy via lockable link mechanisms. The movable support (45) of the energy storage unit consists of a piston in a fixed cylinder (47). The energy storage unit contains a spring (16) with a spring retainer (45) fitted over a guide rod (43) which in turn is attached to a fixed bearing block (42). There is a clearance (49) between the spring retaining cap and the hollow cylinder. The clearance is relatively large and the spring retaining cap is self aligning by means of a guide ring (50).
