The magnetic suspension unit has a magnetic bearing for the frictionless suspension of a rotor relative to a housing and is designed for an inertial energy storage machine. The rotor is a disc-shaped flywheel having its circumferential made from magnetisable material. It comprises an upper cylindrical section and a lower truncated cone shaped section. A metal element coupled to the bottom of the sheet incorporates a permanent magnet ring magnetised parallel to the wheel's axle. The base has a second permanent magnet ring. The two magnets repel one another with a force which is greater than the total weight of the rotor so that it floats in the chamber a few millimeters distant from the base.
