<p>A process for finely-dividing normally solid, synthetic, organic, polymeric thermoplastic resins other than olefin homopolymers comprises subjecting to vigorous agitation at elevated temperature and pressure a mixture of water, molten resin and a minor proportion of a water-soluble ethylene oxide/propylene oxide block copolymer to produce a fine dispersion and thereafter cooling the dispersion below the melting temperature of the resin. Specified resins are polymers of vinyl chloride, acetate, alcohol and acetal; copolymers of olefins such as ethylene with vinyl esters, vinyl alcohol, allyl esters, allyl alcohol, acrylic and methacrylic esters, acroleinl allyl acetone, allyl ethers and allyl benzene; polymers of acrylic and metherylic esters and nitriles; polystyrene; fluorocarbon polymers; polyesters and polyamides, e.g. polyhexamethylene adipamide, polyhexamethylene sebacamide and polycaprolactam. Examples describe the dispersion of (I) an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, (II) an ethylene/ethyl acrylate copolymer, (III) an ethylene/methyl acrylate copolymer, (IV) an ethylene/allyl alcohol copolymer, (V) polyvinyl chloride and (VI and VII) nylon. The resins may be used for coating, e.g. in dispersion form for brush, roller, dip or spray coating and in powder form for static and fluidized bed coating and dusting.</p> |
