<p>1458743 Casting ingots HEPPENSTALL CO 19 March 1974 [9 Oct 1973] 12185/74 Heading B3F A method of producing a large steel ingot having a refined central zone comprises casting an ingot, forming an axial central cavity extending the full length of the ingot, and carrying out an electroslag refining process in the cavity using a consumable steel electrode to melt and re-solidify the portion of the ingot around the cavity. The composition of the electrode may be the same as or different from that of the initially cast ingot. The extent of the refined central zone is determined by the temperature of the ingot and the power input to the electrode and may be controlled by adjustment of these parameters.
