1,115,729. Friction clutches and control thereof. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. 17 Nov., 1965 [30 Dec., 1964], No. 48892/65. Headings F2C and F2L. A clutch comprises a Belleville diaphragm 54 between an end plate 56 and a presser plate 38 keyed at 40, 42 to input member 14, 20, a friction disc 44 being keyed at 34 to output shaft 36. The plate 56, rotatable with member 20, supports a piston 72 on which slides a cylinder 96 which acts on the inner portion of diaphragm 54 to engage the clutch when fluid pressure is admitted to chamber 102 via ports 104, 106, 108, 110 from a solenoid controlled valve, Fig. 1 (not shown). A chamber 92 between piston 72 and member 88 is permanently connected to sump through the solenoid valve to remove fluid that has leaked from chamber 102. The solenoid valve may be manually or thermostatically controlled and the clutch drives a compressor of a vehicle air conditioner, the fluid pressure being derived from the vehicle automatic transmission. Springs 67 each have two arms 71 in openings in bearing lugs 65 of presser plate 38 and a central portion 67a extending through openings in diaphragm 54 to hold the diaphragm and presser plate together to prevent rattle. The member 20 may drivingly engage plate 38 through a pin connection, Fig. 2a (not shown), instead of the tongue and slot 40, 42. |
