1,256,884. Shaft seals. GEORGE ANGUS & CO. Ltd. 24 March, 1969 [23 April, 1968], No. 19160/68. Heading F2B. In a shaft seal comprising a rigid sealing ring 11, e.g. of carbon or phenolic resin, having an end face 12 to bear resiliently against a radial surface of a relatively rotatable part, the ring is removably held in a seat at one end of a moulded rubber sleeve carrier by an interengaging flange and groove connection, the seat having a radial flange base 8 pressed by a compression spring 4 into sealing contact with the back 13 of the ring. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 2, segmental flanges 10 in the ring engage corresponding grooves 9 in a wall 7 of the carrier seat thereby securing the ring to the carrier and also preventing relative rotation therebetween. The wall 7 is stretched manually to permit insertion of the ring 11 and its grip on the ring may be augmented by a garter spring (16, Fig. 5) a metal or plastics ring (17, Fig. 6) or wire binding (19, Fig. 7). The flange 8 may be formed with circular ribs (18, Fig. 6) to engage the back (13) of the ring (11). The carrier has a diaphragm portion 5 and a holding portion 1 reinforced by a metal liner 3 and the spring 4 being compressed between the liner 3 and a washer 14 abutting the flange 8. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 9, the ring 31 has a flange 30 engaging a groove 29 in the carrier wall 27 and an extension 34 in splined engagement with the holding portion 23. |
