Sec. extn. of crude oil is effected by injection of micellar dispersions contg. a petroleum sulphonate, >=5% of which has a polyvalent cation and a HLB value of 3-18 (8-15). At least 10 (20)% of the petroleum sulphonate may be a monovalent cation, e.g. alkali metal or NH4. Dispersions are more effective than dispersions contg. monovalent cations in formations contg. polyvalent cations, esp. when concn. of the latter in the formation water exceeds 1000 (2500) ppm.
