1,215,173. Laminating dissimilar materials. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 15 Feb., 1968 [20 Feb., 1967], No. 7506/68. Heading B5N. A method of making a transparent laminated panel comprising an interlayer of synthetic plastics material sandwiched between two outer, harder layers comprises (i) forming two separate sub-laminates, each comprising a first layer of the same or substantially similar plastics material bonded to a further layer (different in each case) and (ii) bonding said sub-laminates together by means of said first layers, at a temperature below those used to form the sublaminates, so that a single interlayer is formed. Preferably the outer layers comprise glass and polymethyl methacrylate and the interlayer comprises polyvinyl butyral, formed from two plasticized layers of different composition. Alternatively, an outer sheet may comprise polyester resin. The sub-laminates are preferably cooled before bonding. Bonding may be by pressing at elevated temperature, e.g. 38‹ C., or may be achieved by applying solvent or adhesive to the surfaces, followed by light pressure or application of vacuum at room temperature. The surfaces of the sub-laminates which are to be bonded may be textured to facilitate air removal.
|
