A process for preparing a 5-(2,2-dihalovinyl)-4,4-dimethyl-2-oxotetrahydrofuran of formula: (I) wherein X and Z are each either chlorine or bromine, which comprises the step of treating a compound of formula: (II) with an excess of a base selected from alkali metal hydroxides and chemical equivalents thereof.
