1481032 Glutamyl amide derivatives of dopamine ABBOTT LABORATORIES 22 Oct 1974 [23 Oct 1973] 45703/74 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds having the general Formula I wherein R is hydrogen, C 1 to C 20 alkyl or benzyl, and pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts and non-toxic quaternary ammonium salts thereof. Compounds of Formula I in which R is C 1 to C 20 alkyl or benzyl may be prepared by condensing a compound of Formula II wherein R is a protective group and R<SP>1</SP> is C 1 to C 20 alkyl or benzyl, with a compound of Formula III in an inert polar organic solvent, and removing the protective R groups without removing the esterifying group R<SP>1</SP>. Compounds of Formula I wherein R is hydrogen may be prepared by condensing a compound of Formula II in which R<SP>1</SP> is benzyl with dibenzyl dopamine in an inert organic polar solvent, and hydrogenating the product to remove all the benzyl groups. The compounds of Formula I exhibit renal vasodilator and antihypertensive action without having systemic haemodynamic effects and may be administered orally or parenterally alone or in admixture with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
