<p>Silicate base adhesives for bonding plastics to porous materials. G1-. Consist of emulsions of aqueous alkali silicate solns. and organic solvents not miscible with water and boiling at 40 degrees to 180 degrees C. (pref. 50 degrees to 150 degrees C.) containing dispersed hydrophobic finely-divided adsorbent materials. The latter are pref. silica, alkaline earth silicates and carbonates, aluminium silicate and oxide, and activated carbon, or alternatively finely-divided plastics. Emulsifiers may also be added and, for some purposes, a plastics material such as coumarone resin, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride or polyacrylate may be dissolved in the solvent. Stabilisers, consisting of water-soluble quaternary organic ammonium bases or salts with at least one hydroxyl-free alkyl group, and hardening accelerators may also be added. The adhesives give powerful bonds exceeding the strength of the materials joined and which are flame-retardant and water-resistant.</p> |
