Alkylene sulphides (e.g. ethylene sulphide) are prepd. by catalytic dehydration of beta-mercaptoalkanols (e.g. HS.CH2.CH2.OH) pref. at 200-400 degrees/1 atm. over a Ti, Sn, Ni, or Zn, catalyst (eg. Ti O2). In an example, HS.CH2.CH2.OH was passed at 5.3g/hr. for 2 hrs. over Ti O2 (2.5g) mixed with quartz granules (diam. 2-4 mms) in a 14 cm. tube at 50 mm Hg./325 degrees (contact time 2 secs). The yield was 96% and conversion 96%.
|
